In this article I want to take you through what Canva is and whether upgrading your Canva subscription is worth it. In a nutshell…yes!

When you’re an entrepreneur or business owner, you have to wear many hats. You end up becoming, or at least attempting to become, a jack-of-all-trades in every aspect of running a business, from advertising to bookkeeping to providing the service or product itself.

Unfortunately, there are times when this becomes a difficult and frustrating chore. Fortunately, we have access to a wealth of fantastic resources. Canva is one of many such tools available.

For me, and many, many other business owners, Canva is one of those tools and a real game-changer and an absolute necessity.

What exactly is Canva?

Canva is an online tool for creating graphics with a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface. You have instantaneous access to all the tools necessary to develop marketing materials for your company. Best of all, it can be used for free! (That`s the Norfolk boy right there, short arms and long pockets! Hey, come on we all love free don`t we?)

You have your pick of many different, modifiable layouts. They’re all the right proportions for whatever purpose you have in mind. Just some of the many designs you can create include:

  • Presentations
  • Social media posts
  • Videos (yes videos, and with licence free audio)
  • Print products
  • Marketing materials
  • Office supplies

Why, then, is Canva a great fit for me?

The visual nature of our modern world means that if you want your company to be easily recognised, stand out from your competitors, and ultimately succeed, then you simply must have high-quality branded images that will stand out. It really is as simple as that.

Now, the tricky part is making powerful branding elements, and it’s easy to put it off if you’re short on time while trying to focus on other aspects of your business. I know that feeling all too well as I can be the worlds worst procrastinator!

This is where Canva comes in handy. With over 60 million active users every month and a global reach of over 190 countries, this tool has proven indispensable to the smooth running of our business. Through its help, we’ve been able to instruct local business owners on the art of social media content production.

is the the Canva subscription worth it

Here are a few great things that Canva has to offer:

1. It doesn’t cost anything. (That Norfolk boy again!)

So, when it comes to your marketing and branding, we generally don’t like to spend our money. The fact that Canva is a free to use is a real bonus. Even on the free account it gives you access to literally hundreds, if not thousands, of templates that you can use and change to fit your exact needs.

Ok, yes there are some restrictions on the free account. If you don’t want to upgrade and pay £10.99 a month* then you won’t be able to use all of the additional features. Ok, time to upset a few people now…it’s a lot cheaper than most other design platforms out there or hiring a graphic designer to do the work for you. (Sorry graphic designers!)

*Pay annually and it is £99.99 (even better value)

2. You really don’t need to know how to make graphics.

Canva has templates that you can use right away. You don’t need to know anything about design to make an image that will stand out on your social media pages or in your marketing campaigns. Canva will give you easy-to-use templates for the project you want to make if you just search for it.

Now, for me, one of the best things about Canva is that it has a lot of different design layouts to choose from. Using ready-made templates as a starting point for your design gives you that leg-up to get the ball rolling, it helps you make a beautiful design and will save you a lot of valuable time and effort.

If you really want to make your designs unique, you can change them. Drag-and-drop is a simple way to use Canva. I recommend you play around with all the other great features because you will quickly learn how to tweak your designs to fit your brand.

3. Easy to use on any device

Canva is easy to use on your computer or on your phone or tablet, me personally I prefer to use it on desktop.

It has a cloud where you can store all of your amazing designs. So, for example, if you start to create a design, the kettle boils (sorry, I cannot function without 20 cups of tea a day), or you run out of time, you can quite simply put it on hold and carry on where you left off the very next day or whenever you’re ready!

I strongly suggest using Canva on your computer because it’s much easier to use there, that`s my opinion for what it`s worth. But if you’re on the go, you can at least use your phone as a plan B.

4. Easily Set Sizes for your Designs

We all know that it can be hard to get the right size for an image, especially when posting it on social media, because the sizes change all the time! Luckily, Canva sets their sizes for you. Just type in the type of design you want to use, and a list will come up.

5. Stay true to your brand

Canva makes it easy to add your brand’s colours, logo, and font. All of these things help keep things consistent and raise awareness of the brand.

On Canva, you can make a brand kit that includes all of the parts of your brand identity. So, when you make new content, it will be easy to match the designs to your brand.

Even better, you can make copies of these pieces of content to keep things consistent.

For example, if part of your social media plan is to post a quote every Monday, you can copy this post and change it every week with a new quote.

So, is the the Canva subscription worth it?

Yes, Canva can be used quite extensively on the free version and is a powerful tool for creating graphics quickly and easily, and if you’re looking for something that does everything you could possibly want out of a photo editing app, then you’ll love it.

The free version offers plenty of options for basic tasks such as adding text, shapes, and photos to a canvas. If you just want to add a few text boxes to a picture, the free version will do the trick.

You can also edit images online without downloading anything; just upload them directly to

But if you plan to use Canva for professional purposes, then I strongly recommend you consider upgrading to the pro version.

While you won’t find many features that aren’t included in the standard edition, you’ll gain access to far more templates and themes, plus the ability to export your creations into PDF documents, JPGs, PNGs, and EPS files. Plus, the premium subscription includes unlimited storage space for saving your designs, and you’ll be able to download your projects anywhere, anytime.

An added bonus is the vast library of stock images, videos, graphics and audio that you will have access to. And don`t get me started on the Magic Resize feature!

Ok, you got me started on the Magic Resize feature. “What is it Martin?” I hear you say.

It`s a nifty little feature that allows you to resize your design with a click of a button. For example, you have created a fantastic design for Instagram but you want to use it on Twitter and LinkedIn too. Bingo! Hit that Magic Resize button or the specific platforms and away you go! You can even add your own custom dimensions in if you wanted to.

In my opinion, Canva is a great tool for your business, for any business. I know those that love Photoshop will be tearing their hair out and want to throw me into graphic design jail if there is such a thing!

Don’t get me wrong—there are a lot of tools out there, and I do use some of them, I even use Photoshop as a matter of fact. But I can use Canva so easily, and so quickly. And it helped me show my clients how to create imagery or videos for their social media to market themselves in a very smart way.

So, if you run a small business Canva will save you a lot of time, money, and trouble.

Since it’s free, there’s no reason not to give it a try, right? You can always upgrade at a later date…after you have fallen in love with it, and you will!
